New York Mets All-Time Roster

This is the New York Mets all-time roster. I decided to select two players for each infield position, six outfielders (regardless of specific position), and one designated hitter for each AL team. Hitters had to have a minimum of 1,500 plate appearance. For pitching, we selected seven starting pitchers, three non-closers, and two closers. Starting pitchers had to start at least 100 games during their time with the franchise to qualify. Relief pitchers were deemed non-closers if they saved less than 30 games. Closers are pitchers that save more than 30 games.

  • At catcher, I’d pick Jerry Grote over Mike Piazza. Piazza was one of the best pure hitters in baseball during his time with the Mets; but the catching position is all about defense–and the stubborn truth is that Mike Piazza won many more games with his bat than with his glove despite handling the pitchers well. Throughout his entire career, Mike Piazza allowed 1,400 stolen bases in 1,600 games caught. That’s a concerning statistic for a starting catcher. Also, when the Dodgers traded Mike Piazza back in 1998, starting pitcher Ishmael Valdez remarked that he was relived that both his fellow pitchers and he would no longer have to be afraid to throw curve balls. Now, for a decade, Jerry Grote was an all-around defensive wiz for the Mets at the catching position. Grote’s contemporary, the great Johnny Bench, once said that he would have to play third base if he was on the same team as Grote. That’s one hell of a compliment.
