New York Mets All-Time Roster

Updated 02/27/2022

This is the New York Mets all-time roster. The roster consists of one starter and one bench player for each infield position and one starter and one bench player for each outfield position. Hitters had to have a minimum of 1,500 plate appearances. For pitching, I selected five starting pitchers and three relief pitchers. Starting pitchers had to start at least 75 games during their time with the franchise to qualify. Relief pitchers had to accumulate a minimum of 150 innings pitched to be eligible.

  1. At catcher, I’d pick Jerry Grote over Mike Piazza. Piazza was one of the best pure hitters in baseball during his time with the Mets; but the catching position is all about defense–and the stubborn truth is that Mike Piazza won many more games with his bat than with his glove despite handling the pitchers well. Throughout his entire career, Mike Piazza allowed 1,400 stolen bases in 1,600 games caught. That’s a concerning statistic for a starting catcher. Also, when the Dodgers traded Mike Piazza back in 1998, starting pitcher Ishmael Valdez remarked that he was relived that both his fellow pitchers and he would no longer have to be afraid to throw curve balls. Now, for a decade, Jerry Grote was an all-around defensive wiz for the Mets at the catching position. Grote’s contemporary, the great Johnny Bench, once said that he would have to play third base if he was on the same team as Grote. That’s one hell of a compliment.

  2. I would have included Carlos Delgado instead of Lucas Duda at first, David Cone over Sid Fernandez, and John Franco instead of Benitez.
