One response to “Philadelphia Phillies All-Time Roster”

  1. In 1883, Lawyer John Rogers and Sporting Goods magnate, Al Reach acquired the NL Worchestor Worcesters (Ruby Legs) franchise rights for a NL team in Philadelphia. They named the team the Philadelphia Quakers. The Quakers did very badly so, in 1884, they renamed the team the Philadelphia Philadelphias in hope to change the image. However, fans and media preferred to call the team the Phillies or keep with the initial name of the Quakers. In 1890, the official name became the Philadelphia Phillies.
Even though the Phillies have more losses than any other franchise in professional sports, in my opinion, they have the greatest all time MLB team. Whitey Ashburn is the greatest defensive CF all time and Billy Hamilton is the greatest lead off hitter all time. The 1894 OF hit over .400 and is the greatest OF all time. The weak point is the bullpen:

C Bob Boone, Jack Clement (Left handed catcher)
    1B Dick Allen, Ryan Howard
    2B Nap LaJoie, Chase Utley
    3B Mike Schmidt
    SS Jimmy Rollins, Larry Bowa

LF Ed Delehanty, Sherry Magee, Lefty O’Doul, Greg Luzinski
CF Whitey Ashburn, Billy Hamilton, Cy Williams
RF Chuck Klein, Sam Thompson, Bobby Abreu, Gavvy Cravath

    SUB Lave Cross

SPR Pete Alexander, Robin Roberts, Jim Bunning, Curt Schilling, Charlie Ferguson, Tully Sparks, Roy Halliday, Aaron Nola
SPL Steve Carlton, Curt Simmons, Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee

RPR John Papelbon, Steve Bedrosian, Gene Garber, Ron Reed, Jim Konstanty, Brad Lidge
    RPL Tug McGraw, Billy Wagner
