Introduction

The New York Mets joined Major League Baseball as an expansion franchise in 1962, filling the National League void left by the departures of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants to California after the 1957 season. Created to restore National League baseball to New York City, the Mets quickly became one of the sport’s most recognizable franchises. Although their inaugural 1962 club became famous for its struggles, the organization achieved one of baseball’s greatest turnarounds just seven years later with the “Miracle Mets” of 1969.
