Introduction

The Houston Astros have built one of the most distinctive histories in Major League Baseball, evolving from an expansion franchise into a perennial championship contender. Founded in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45s, the organization adopted the Astros name in 1965 as Houston became closely associated with the nation’s growing space program. The franchise spent its first five decades in the National League, gradually developing a strong tradition behind stars such as José Cruz, Nolan Ryan, Craig Biggio, and Jeff Bagwell before emerging as one of baseball’s most successful organizations of the 21st century.

The Astros moved from the National League Central to the American League West in 2013, becoming the first modern franchise to win pennants in both leagues. After capturing their first National League pennant in 2005, Houston developed a championship core featuring José Altuve, Carlos Correa, George Springer, Alex Bregman, and Justin Verlander, winning World Series championships in 2017 and 2022 while making four World Series appearances in six seasons from 2017 through 2022.
