1993 George Steinbrenner is reinstated as general partner of the New York Yankees. He was banned from day to day activities by commissioner Fay Vincent because of his relationship with a convicted gambler.
1969 Mickey Mantle announces his retirement. He joins a list of legends who spent their entire Hall of Fame careers in Yankee pinstripes: Yogi Berra, Earle Combs, Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, Lou Gehrig, and Phil Rizzuto.
1967 Commissioner William Eckert approves the BBWAA plan to give out a Cy Young Award to one American League and one National League pitcher. Since it’s inception in 1956, the Cy Young Award was given to one pitcher regardless of league.
