Introduction

The Tampa Bay Rays entered Major League Baseball as an expansion franchise in 1998, originally known as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. After struggling through much of their first decade, the franchise adopted the Rays name before the 2008 season and quickly emerged as one of the American League’s most competitive organizations. Despite frequently operating with one of baseball’s smaller payrolls, Tampa Bay has built a reputation for innovative roster construction, player development, pitching, and finding value in overlooked players.

The Rays captured their first American League pennant in 2008 behind a young core that included Evan Longoria, Carl Crawford, B.J. Upton, and James Shields, and they returned to the World Series in 2020. Longoria became the defining player of the franchise’s rise, while players such as Crawford, Shields, David Price, Ben Zobrist, Kevin Kiermaier, and Blake Snell also played important roles in the club’s history.
